Spurs may have had the best defensive record in the Premier League last season, but as soon as Danny Rose or Kyle Walker got injured, all of the Spurs fans in the Tavern went into panic mode…
Ben Davies, to his credit, has been fairly solid and Trippier’s assured displays have helped to allay some fears of Kyle Walkers’ future, but if Pochettino wants to seriously challenge for the title then he needs depth in defence.
A lot of the transfer rumours regarding Spurs have been focused on improving their midfield and attacking prowess, however, our landlord believes that a good defence is the key to winning (or at least challenging) for the league title.
There is no question that Spurs’ back line is top class but it can always be improved, and if they want to be competitive in the Champions League, win domestic cups and maintain a title challenge – then there is no doubt that some quality signings for their defence are needed.
Here are the two defenders that Tottenham should consider making a move for this summer…
Djibril Sidibe
When Spurs travelled to Monaco in last seasons Champions League they were given a lesson in football. Spurs went crashing out in the group stages while Monaco and their team of youngsters made it quite convincingly to the semi-finals.
Djibril Sidibe was a constant threat going forward, and had the pace and strength to avoid getting caught out at the back. With the ability to operate in either full back position he must be high on many people’s radar, not just Spurs.
He would certainly come at a premium, but he would upgrade Tottenham’s defence definitively.
Ryan Sessegnon
Pochittino needs to act fast to sign this whizzkid from Fulham. Sessegnon spent last season terrorising Championship defences with his tricky runs forward, and his immense pace and fitness meant tracking back was never an issue.
His versatility going forward has lead many comparisons to Gareth Bale, and if he turns out even half as successful as the Welshman then Tottenham should snap him up before anyone else comes calling.
Able to play both in defence and attack, he would be a real asset for Pochettino.
