Tottenham Hotspur: Tanguy Ndombele ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Tanguy Ndombele has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Ndombele missed Tottenham’s 3-1 win at Newcastle United after injuring his knee during training on Monday.

The club’s record signing has only played 64 minutes of football since the Premier League restart and will miss the final two matches of the season. Mourinho initially dismissed the problem but admitted he won’t be available to face Leicester City or Crystal Palace.

Giovani Lo Celso showed where Spurs can benefit the most with his performance in Mourinho’s first league win at St James’ Park. However, adding this latest injury update to a long list of setbacks is surely bad news for the manager.

As Alasdair Gold points out, Spurs have still missed Christian Eriksen, despite his slump in form at Inter Milan. Lo Celso pushed forward which enabled him to switch the formation from 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 set up.

Harry Kane has been starved of service and Spurs have been crying out for a playmaker to step forward and create chances for Kane.

Ndombele has failed to convince Mourinho he deserves another chance, although he must have plenty of talent and potential if Spurs were willing to pay €62m (£55.45m) for him, which makes their public spat even more frustrating.

Admittedly there are only two games left to play, but the hunt for European football is arguably hotter than ever before, with Tottenham back in the thick of the Europa League race after two wins this week.

Leicester have been on a patchy run of form lately but the Foxes fought to a 2-1 win over Tottenham at the King Power Stadium back in September, and Spurs’ penultimate game of the season could prove pivotal in the race for the Europa League.

Bearing this in mind, Mourinho will need his players to be at their very best and he could end up missing Ndombele, as the Frenchman has saved his best performances for big games in the Champions League this season.
