Tottenham Transfer News: Atletico linked Romero admits La Liga desire

Tottenham vice captain Cristian Romero had admitted he would “love” to play in La Liga, further fueling speculation of a move to Atletico Madrid. Romero’s future at the club has been doubtful for a few months, with rumours swirling about interest from several clubs.

Atletico Madrid are said to be the front runner for his signature, while cross-town rivals Real are also known to be in the market for a central defender.

“La Liga is left for me to play in, I would love to, to tell you the truth,” Romero said while speaking to Gaston Edul of TyC Sports. “I would love to play there because it’s the league I’m missing.”

Finishing strong

Romero has endured an injury-ravaged campaign, only managing 18 appearances this season. He will be hoping to finish the season strongly, with Tottenham chasing European success after a disappointing league campaign.

Spurs have lost 18 of their 33 league games and find themselves in 16th place following Monday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest. They could however still qualify for a place in next season’s Champions League by way of a Europa League triumph, and find themselves in a semi final showdown with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt.

“I try to above all live the day to day,” the defender added. “There are almost two months until the championship ends and in my head it’s always (about) performing to the maximum, trying to finish in the best way possible.

“We’re in the semi-final of the Europa League. It’s an important step for the club after so many years where they hadn’t reached those stages. To say I’m happy (with that)? No, because in the end I want to win it, but it depends on a lot of things. After that, once the championship finishes, we’ll see.”

Easier said than done

The Times has reported that Tottenham were aware of the interview, with it taking place at their training ground, however the player himself organized the sit down.

Any potential deal for Romero is believed to be difficult to complete, with the Argentina international still having two years remaining on his current deal. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator and reports have suggested that Romero’s fee could be in the ballpark of £60m.

Romero mentioned that any talks of his future are premature at the moment, with his focus solely on finishing the season strong with Tottenham.

“The truth is I haven’t spoken to my representative yet but I’m open to anything. In my head, I always (think about) growing, also (about) going to new places to keep growing but I don’t want to talk about that yet because there’s a few months left of the championship.”

Spurs fans will be hoping that if indeed these are parting words from Romero, he leaves the club some silverware as a parting gift.
