Sunderland: Premier League interest in Dennis Cirkin in January

Stadium of Light, Sunderland, Britain - August 27, 2022. Norwich City's Todd Cantwell and Joshua Sargent in action with Sunderland's Dennis Cirkin.

Sunderland reportedly risk losing Dennis Cirkin to a club in the Premier League in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Wigan masterclass

The 20-year-old returned to the starting line-up to produce a masterclass for the Wearside club in their 2-1 win at home to Wigan Athletic at the Stadium of Light in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The defender scored one goal and set up the other for his team, while he also won seven of his duels and recorded two clearances and two interceptions in the match (SofaScore).

It was reported last week that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in bringing Cirkin back to north London in January, and now another top-flight team have joined the race.

The Latest: Brentford join Cirkin race

As per The Sun, Brentford are now set to rival Tottenham for Cirkin as they are looking to bring him in as a potential long-term replacement for Rico Henry.

Tony Mowbray’s Sunderland may be tempted to make a quick profit on the 20-year-old, and the youngster may well have a decision to make as to whether he wants to stay in Wearside or test himself in the Premier League.

The Verdict: Keep him!

Cirkin showed his worth to the Black Cats against Wigan, and they should be looking to try and keep hold of him at all costs.

Sunderland failed to win in three of their four games in the Championship previously while he was injured, and he made an instant impact upon his return against the Latics.

Cirkin started every Championship match this season before his injury, highlighting his importance to the team, so it’s imperative that the Wearside club try to retain him for as long as possible.
