Sunderland are reportedly now set to sign Jack Clarke on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur, and he has already done the first part of his medical.

The Lowdown: Impressive loan

The 21-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season, where he managed one goal and four assists and was a mainstay in Alex Neil’s team which won promotion to the Championship after victory in the League One play-off final (Transfermarkt).

Hailed as a ‘quality’ player by the Black Cats manager, Clarke ranked as the Wearside club’s seventh-best performer in League One as he picked up three man-of-the-match awards and averaged an impressive 1.5 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per match in the third tier (WhoScored).

The Latest: Loan to permanent…

As per Football Insider, ‘sources’ have indicated that Sunderland have now ‘agreed’ to sign Clarke permanently, with the youngster having ‘already started a medical’ ahead of his pending arrival at the Stadium of Light.

A ‘full agreement’ is in place between both clubs over a transfer fee, and the 21-year-old will do the other part of his medical at the club’s pre-season training camp in Portugal.

The Verdict: Great move

After Clarke’s performances last term, it is a great move from Sunderland to bring him back to the club.

The Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has claimed that the winger was ‘excellent’ for them and that he would be a ‘very good signing’, and it is hard to disagree with that verdict.

The 21-year-old’s £25,000-per-week wages would likely have to be negotiated down quite significantly in order not to break the club’s wage structure, but nonetheless this is a deal which should please the supporters on Wearside.
