Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Tottenham striker Darren Bent has stated he is ‘all for’ Spurs signing Leicester City winger Demarai Gray, going on to claim he is ‘electric’ and a player about whom supporters could get ‘excited’ ahead of the new Premier League season.
The same news outlet revealed last week that Spurs were plotting a potential £20m move to secure the attacker and had opened ‘preliminary talks’ over his signature, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano also confirming that Daniel Levy is after a winger.
As well as a centre-back and striker, a key man out wide is on the agenda for Spurs as Jose Mourinho’s first full campaign in charge looms large, and Bent believes Gray could make an impact in north London.
Should Spurs sign Demarai Gray for £20 million?
Yes, unreal potential
No, average at best
“I’m a big fan of Demarai Gray, the only thing is his consistency. He’s never really been consistent for a large period of time,” explained the former Spurs striker.
“He’s certainly got something, you can see that when he gets the ball, he can make things happen and when he comes off the bench he’s always quite electric.
“Listen, if they feel like he’s the one that they quite like and excited about and they can get him then I’m all for it.”
Described as ‘excellent‘ by Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, although the majority of his appearances over 2019/20 came from the substitute’s bench, he still managed to make a significant impact, scoring two goals and assisting three more in just 609 minutes of league action (WhoScored).
At £20m, there is reason to believe this is a high price, but the fact he is homegrown could have raised his market value even further.
Regardless, ex-Spurs striker Bent believes he may well be an ‘electric’ addition at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Football Insider claimed that Mauricio Pochettino was also a ‘firm admirer‘ of the England Under-21 international.
