Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Ryan Sessegnon from Tottenham Hotspur on loan in the summer, reports say.

The Sun claims Newcastle boss Steve Bruce wants to offer the Spurs starlet a way out, amid interest from defending Dutch champions Ajax.

Fulham were reportedly the front-runners to re-sign the 20-year-old after he left Craven Cottage for north London on transfer deadline day last August.

However, Fulham director of football Tony Khan has made it clear that the club will not be making a move for their former player, which has paved the way for the Magpies to steal a march on their closest rivals.

Bruce is in the hunt for bargains this summer and the England U21 international is reportedly at the top of his list.

Sessegnon has so far struggled to hit the ground running, having started four games in the top flight last term.

However, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has not made a decision about his future and it remains to be seen if he will be allowed to leave in the summer.

Mourinho has high hopes for the youngster, telling football.london he is "absolutely fantastic," but it is understood that he wants to be playing regularly, which is something the Portuguese has failed to provide.

He is an unpolished gem, as he has shown flashes of what he can offer after he became the club's youngest ever scorer in the Champions League after he bagged a goal against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. The former Fulham man was making his second appearance in the European premier competition, setting a new club record in the process.

Sessegnon needs a change of scenery and St James' Park may be the perfect place for him to earn his stripes, as Bruce is willing to put his faith in youngsters like Matty Longstaff. He must get some minutes under his belt to continue his development as a player and he could return to north London armed with the experience to challenge for a place in the starting lineup.
