Tottenham Hotspur: Stefan de Vrij ‘closer and closer’ to north London -Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumours

According to a report by Spanish news outlet Fichajes, there has been a rather encouraging update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes Serie A raid…

It is little surprise that the 52-year-old has been tipped to raid both Serie A and his former clubs for talent as he aims to guide Spurs back to the European summit.

There have been no shortage of reports linking Conte with some of the Italian top flight’s biggest names as various sources from the continent make interesting claims.

Calciomercato recently explained that the former Chelsea boss has demanded a seismic €280m (£239.6m) transfer war chest as he keeps tabs on Federico Chiesa, Matthijs de Ligt, Marcelo Brozovic, Alessio Romagnoli, Dusan Vlahovic and De Vrij.

Can you name all of these forgotten Spurs wonderkids? This guy was once called 'the next Didier Drogba'...

The latter was a mainstay for Conte at Inter last season and a key component of his 2020/21 Scudetto-title winning campaign. Football Insider also stated that Spurs’ manager personally told the Lilywhites to sign De Vrij as a very encouraging update now comes from Spain.

The Latest: De Vrij ‘closer and closer’ to Spurs…

As per Fichajes, the 29-year-old is now ‘getting closer and closer’ to signing for Tottenham and moving to the Premier League.

It is claimed that Conte has his sights on De Vrij, who the report cited as one of the best defenders in Serie A, as he plots a raid on his former club in particular. This is because he wants to solve a ‘severe problem’ in the centre of defence by signing an astute partner for Cristian Romero.

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

News that Spurs are ‘closer and closer’ to making the Netherlands powerhouse one of Conte’s first signings should certainly excite supporters given his experience and quality. De Vrij was a key figure under the Italian last season as Inter ended Juventus’ nine-year stranglehold on the Serie A crown.

According to WhoScored, the £116,000-per-week ace averaged a very impressive 93.8% pass accuracy out from the back and marked himself out as a truly world-class ball-playing centre-half. When compared to Tottenham’s squad domestically, no Lilywhites first team player could reach that figure, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg coming the closest (88.5%, WhoScored).

These figures point to an assured and composed figure at the back who could perhaps marshal Tottenham’s backline and provide some assurance, especially considering that his former teammate Mauricio labelled him a ‘monster’.

De Vrij has also racked up more than half a century of international caps for the Netherlands, playing in two major tournaments, and his experience on the biggest stages in world football could be a real booster for Spurs.

There are plenty of reasons for Conte to get this deal over the line, and we believe the 29-year-old would come as a very astute purchase.
