Tottenham Hotspur: Journalist questions Gareth Bale stance after Spurs furlough controversy - Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumours

Writing on Twitter, journalist Daniel Storey has thrown question marks around Gareth Bale’s sensational return to Tottenham by bringing attention to the club’s willingness to pay 50% of his reported £600,000-per-week salary before tax – especially considering the furlough controversy from earlier this year.

Over the last few days, Bale’s reunion in north London has attracted plenty of media attention as chairman Daniel Levy seals the return of a Spurs icon over seven years after he joined Real Madrid for a then-world record £85 million fee.

The logistics of his season-long loan, including Spurs’ reported stance that they’re willing to fork out around £300,000-per-week, have now been questioned by journalist Storey considering it took ‘so long‘ to reverse their furlough decision over not paying club staff the extra 20% of their wages.

Should the club pay 50% of his wages?

During the height of lockdown, it was reported that Tottenham had indeed opted to utilise the furlough scheme in a bid to save money – with the Lilywhites missing out on crucial match-ticket sales and TV revenue given the season’s untimely postponement.

Spurs’ financial ability was exacerbated further by a report in the Athletic, which stated the club had to borrow £175 million through a government and Bank of England scheme in order to offset huge losses.

Now, after the club seal two mega signings in Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon, much has been made of Tottenham’s ability to do so considering their past furlough stance – an aspect of the move which ‘sticks in the throat’ according to Storey.

Where did Mauricio Pochettino complete his playing career?

After this exciting turn of events, supporters will be swooning over the Welshman’s pending first game back as a Spurs player, but perhaps there is a slightly questionable aspect to it all from a financial standpoint.
