According to the Daily Mirror, both Tottenham and Liverpool are eyeing summer moves for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips – with the report even suggesting that Daniel Levy will double the player’s salary.
Phillips, who is said to be attracting a huge fan in Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, has also been earning praise from pundits for his performances at Elland Road recently.
Should Spurs sign Kalvin Phillips for £50m this summer?
Yes, 100%, next level
As if, no need for him
Phillips on the rise
The midfield ace was called up by England boss Gareth Southgate over the season’s first international break for his first caps after impressing under Marcelo Bielsa in the Premier League.
Phillips was a huge part of Leeds’ promotion to the top flight last campaign, with left-back Barry Douglas describing him as the best player he’s ever shared a pitch with.
The praise seems to be never-ending, with Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan waxing lyrical over the ‘brilliant‘ 24-year-old after he was called up to the national team.
Transfer Tavern take
Bearing all this in mind, it’s little wonder why Levy allegedly wants to double his current £30,000-per-week wage, but he’ll do well to whittle down Leeds’ stunning asking price.
Given the presence of Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Moussa Sissoko in central midfield, Spurs seem stacked in that position.
Taking this into account, Tottenham investing £50m in Phillips seems unlikely at best.
