According to a report by Calciomercato, an update has emerged on the future of Paris-Saint Germain striker Mauro Icardi and it involves Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Pochettino eyes 2016 move...

As per the player's wife and agent Wanda Nara, the Argentine was a target for Tottenham and former boss Mauricio Pochettino in 2016 before he ended up penning a new deal at ex-club Inter Milan.

Icardi was the subject of interest from Spurs who spoke directly to Nerazzurri sporting director Piero Ausilio over a move.

“Seeing as Ausilio wanted to see the offers, I brought him the proposals from PSG, Napoli and Juventus. There was also Tottenham, although they spoke directly with Piero," Nara told Infobae (via golazoargentino.com).

Now, it appears Spurs have reignited their interest some years later.

The Latest: Spurs re-join race...

As per Calciomercato, Spurs have re-joined the race to sign Icardi as they seek an alternative forward to star man Harry Kane.

According to the Italian source, PSG's striker is now a target for Tottenham as well as Juventus and the newly taken over Newcastle United.

His current deal expires in 2024 meaning the Ligue 1 giants could have plenty of leverage in negotiations.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Lauded as a 'world class' attacker who is 'almost impossible to mark' by legendary Serie A centre-half Giorgio Chiellini in his autobiography (via PSG Talk), Icardi could be a very solid alternative to fellow target Dusan Vlahovic.

He has also bagged 171 goals for three different clubs across his senior career and is still currently in his prime, but it remains to be seen just how much Pochettino and PSG would be willing to take for his services.
