Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs plot late move for Arsenal transfer target Willian as Chelsea exit looms

Tottenham Hotspur are trying to hijack Arsenal’s transfer move for Willian, according to The Independent.
Although Arsenal are favourites if the Chelsea winger leaves Stamford Bridge in the summer, Spurs are plotting a late move for the 69-cap Brazil international.
Willian has still not come to terms with Chelsea, even though he has been offered a new two-year deal by the Blues, and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are leading the race to sign the Brazilian in the transfer window. However, Jose Mourinho’s side have now entered the mix and will try to thwart their arch-rivals’ attempts to land the player.
Willian has been tipped to make a move across London, with both the Lilywhites and Arsenal competing for his signature.
Mourinho signed the 31-year-old seven years ago during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge and the two have kept in touch since. The former Shakhtar Donetsk forward shares the same agent as his former Blues teammate David Luiz, who is currently plying his trade at the Emirates.
Willian missed the FA Cup defeat to the Gunners last weekend but wants to be fit for Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 clash with Bayern Munich at the Bridge.
Who should Spurs sign from Chelsea?
Willian
Kurt Zouma
The Brazil winger, who turns 32 on Sunday, has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon, as he scored five goals and supplied three assists since the Premier League restarted in June.
However, the Brazilian has been holding out for a three-year contract and it is unlikely that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will want to offer the veteran that long of a deal.
It is worth remembering that Willian remains a divisive figure among the fan base after he turned down Tottenham in favour of a move to the Blues in 2013, despite the fact he had already passed his medical (via The Guardian).
While there is no denying that the Chelsea man is a quality player, as he earned a higher WhoScored rating than Erik Lamela and Steven Bergwijn, Arsenal are in pole position to sign the free agent in the summer. Therefore, Levy will have his work cut out if Mourinho is determined to get his man, as Arteta appears to be already ahead in the chase.
