Tottenham Hotspur versus Borussia Dortmund was certainly one of the more exciting looking fixtures in the Champions League first round of knockouts, and the opening game certainly didn’t disappoint.
The visitors looked the more likely of the two teams in the first half but failed to match the quality and intensity of Spurs following the break.
Pochettino had clearly said something to his players at half time who took only two minutes to provide the opening goal of the game.
A nicely swung in ball from marauding Jan Vertonghen was met by the well-controlled boot of Son who volleyed home Tottenham’s first of the game – and his ninth goal in eleven games against Dortmund (via Sky Sports).
This move would set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Dortmund attempted a couple of dangerous attacking movements but were quickly snuffed out by Pochettino’s men who just had too much on the day.
Vertonghen’s remarkable efforts at the left-wing back position were rewarded late on the game after he latched onto a perfectly weighted ball from Serge Aurier, before substitute Fernando Llorente bullied his marker in the box and nodded home Tottenham’s third of the game.
3-0 Spurs victory.
Belgian Vertonghen deservedly took home the Man of the Match award for his efforts on the left-hand side of the pitch, and of course the goal.
However, special mention should also be given to Serge Aurier who once again proved why he should occupy the starting spot over Trippier.
Keeping check of winger Christian Pulisic is no easy task, but the Ivorian completed it with such conviction. And his efforts were duly rewarded with the clean-sheet Tottenham needed heading into the way fixture.
An assist for Tottenham’s second of the game was the icing on the cake.
