In our latest instalment of the Flashback series, we take a look back at how some Sheffield United fans responded to the news of David McGoldrick initially signing for the club, amid his first-ever international goal over the weekend break.
David McGoldrick personifies a Chris Wilder signing. Not many would have fancied McGoldrick to be a hit in Sheffield considering his previous injury problems and ripe age, however, his 15 goals were huge in the club getting promoted last season.
The Irish international is turning 32 in November, however, his career isn’t showing many signs of slowing up. This is the first time in his career that he has played in the Premier League and last Thursday he scored his first-ever international goal – a vital equaliser versus Switzerland at the Aviva Stadium.
McGoldrick and Sheffield United fans probably couldn’t have predicted things to have gone the way they have since he joined, and some decent proof of that would be the fan reactions to the player joining the club.
Plenty of Blades fans weighed in with their opinions, with many criticising the club for taking on a player with such a bad record for injuries.

As you can see, fans in July 2018 were far more interested in signing Martyn Waghorn than the then-innocuous buy of David McGoldrick. They might be quite happy they got him instead now, considering his obvious importance to the side these days.
So far this season McGoldrick has played every game this season, and Sheffield United fans have been proven right by Wilder as he hasn’t had a serious injury throughout his spell at Bramall Lane and has actually performed rather robustly, winning the most fouls per game (1.4) out of anyone in the squad this season.
Sheffield United fans will now hope that their attacker can bring the form he’s had in the Euro 2020 qualifiers into the club side. The Blades have had a fantastic start so far, recording five points from their first four games, but will want to make that seven from five as they play Southampton at home this weekend.
