Chelsea are monitoring Sergio Ramos’ situation at Real Madrid amidst rumours of a growing rift between player and manager following his omission from the team that beat Manchester City.
Should the situation not improve the Blues will look to sign the Spanish defender in January. Reports coming out of Madrid suggest Jose Mourinho is happy to let Ramos leave if they cannot resolve their differences.
This is not the first time the former Sevilla player has had issues with Mourinho. In January Ramos criticised him following a loss to rivals Barcelona. Yet the often controversial Real boss denied he has any problems with the 26-year-old and stated he was left out of the Champions League clash ‘on sports grounds’.
But, even that seems strange. In the ‘group of death’ the Real-City game was a clash of the titans. Ramos is one of the world’s best defenders, a darling of the imperious Spanish national team and a mainstay in the Real defence since his arrival as a 19-year-old in 2004. Dropping him for football reasons is bizarre, unheard of.
So despite Mourinho’s protestations, it would certainly appear all is not right at the Bernabeu. But that does not mean Chelsea will profit from the situation.
Firstly, the manager is not in the strongest position having presided over one of the worst league starts in the clubs history. Had City beaten Madrid without Ramos one suspects the fall out would have been considerable.
Quite simply, it is unthinkable that Ramos would leave Los Merengues. Madrid are in the habit of buying world class players, not selling them. Entering his eighth year at the club Ramos is an icon of the club. Not a product of the youth system but every bit as synonymous with the famous white shirt as legends like Raul and Iker Casillas.
His departure would not be well received by the Real fans and Mourinho knows this. He is also aware of the defenders outstanding talent. Whatever the issue and for all the ‘special ones’ arrogance he will not want to sell a world class defender, in his prime, to a Champions League rival and a former club.
