TT Battle: Billy Sharp vs Martyn Waghorn

Transfer Battles Generic

Derby County currently find themselves in a promising position to secure a play-off place, with Sheffield United also in contention as the New Year approaches.

The Rams have defied expectations under Frank Lampard in the current campaign, with promotion to the Premier League being the main aim from here on in. Meanwhile, the Blades have dropped off the pace slightly in recent times, but promotion is still well within their sights at this point.

Interestingly, Sheffield United will welcome Derby County to Bramall Lane later on today, so we took a look at Billy Sharp and Martyn Waghorn’s influence at their respective clubs.

With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…

BILLY SHARP

Billy Sharp just seems to get better and better as his footballing career progresses, with goals still flying in left, right, and centre as he’s already into double figures for the season.

Sheffield United continue to reap the rewards from the brilliant agreement they secured to bring him to Bramall Lane, with promotion to the Premier League being dependant on how the 32-year-old fares from here on in.

TT GRADE: A

MARTYN WAGHORN

Martyn Waghorn was a big signing for Frank Lampard back in the summer transfer window as he made the move from Ipswich Town for an initial £5 million, which could rise to £7.5 million.

However, the attacker just hasn’t been able to find his feet in front of goal in the current campaign, with just a few goals and a couple of assists to his name.

So, it’s safe to that Derby County will be regretting the amount of money they spent on the Englishman back in the summer months as he has offered very little so far.

TT GRADE: B

TT VERDICT:

When comparing these two, it’s safe to say that Billy Sharp is enjoying the rub of the green a this moment in time, with Martyn Waghorn is struggling to even enjoy regular minutes in the side.

The Blades’ star attacker has been influential in the current campaign and he will no doubt play a huge part from here on in, with goals always guaranteed when he’s in the side.

Meanwhile, the Derby County man needs to seek immediate improvements if he is to have any kind of future at Pride Park, as Lampard could look to bring in additions in January.

Both players are at opposite ends of the spectrum in the Championship at this moment in time, as Sharp continues to fire his side towards promotion, while Waghorn has had to take a back seat in Derby’s promotion push.
