This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.
In recent seasons, Manchester United have spent a lot of money on holding and box-to-box midfielders.
The Red Devils parted with a fee of £47m to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2018, while the year before that they bought Nemanja Matic from Chelsea for £40m. All things considered, though, it is Scott McTominay — signed for nothing — who is proving to be the real lynchpin in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield.
With a market valuation of £10.8m last summer, the 23-year-old is now worth £25.2m, according to Transfermarkt. And such an increase is probably fair given what he has brought to the side as a regular.
As per WhoScored, McTominay currently has the third-best average in Manchester United’s squad for tackles made per game (Premier League) with 2.1. He is also being dribbled past just 0.7 times per game, a display of his steel in the middle. To put that number into perspective, midfield partner Fred is on the receiving end of three dribbles per match.
How much is Scott McTominay worth?
£25m or more
Less than £25m
For that, the Scotland international deserves plaudits, which he has been getting. “You see for example, McTominay’s performance … he was dominant. He was dominant,” were the words of Jose Mourinho (via Reuters) when speaking about his former player following Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at the end of 2019.
Close to £30m, you would expect McTominay’s valuation to only rise if he can continue to be the dominant figure that Mourinho has come to appreciate.
