TT Valuation Evaluation: Southampton’s Nathan Redmond

This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.

Nathan Redmond has certainly had some tough spells during his time as a Southampton player.

The English winger, 22 at the time, signed for the Saints from Norwich City back in the summer of 2016 and showed a lot of initial promise. In 37 Premier League appearances, he scored seven goals as Claude Puel oversaw his development.

However, the following season, Redmond was well off the pace. This time around, he managed just the sole goal in a disappointing campaign that saw Southampton finish just above the relegation zone.

Following the appointment of Ralph Hasenhuttl as manager, though, Redmond has looked rejuvenated. Last term, he averaged 2.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League, the most in Southampton’s squad and an increase from the 1.8 he was making the term prior (via WhoScored).

According to Transfermarkt, he now has a market valuation of £18m, higher than his December 2018 valuation of £16.2m and August 2016 valuation of £9m — roughly what Southampton paid for him. And looking at his dribbling ability and the couple of seasons where he has been able to pose a bit of a threat in front of goal, such as that one in 2016/17, that is probably fair.

To be worth more, though, the former Norwich man will likely need to start scoring more consistently, something Puel spoke about during his time at St. Mary’s.

“I think he doesn’t score a lot of goals and he has all the quality for this because he is very clinical in the training session with good feet and fantastic quality,” Puel was quoted as saying by the Southern Daily Echo in 2017. “It is important for the confidence for him and it’s important he tries because he has good feet,” the former Southampton boss later added.

If he addresses that area of his game, then it would not be a surprise to see clubs offer big bucks for his signature.
