After the latest weekend of action it’s Liverpool who are top of the Premier League table, with our Reds fans here in the Transfer Tavern desperate to see them stay there for the rest of the season now.
The Reds have famously not won the title since 1990 but under Jurgen Klopp they look like they’re going to go perhaps the closest they have in the years since, with a real sense of optimism and confidence exuding from Anfield right now.
The fans are happy, the board is happy, Klopp is certainly happy and most of all the players look delighted to be playing for the club right now.
That’s been reflected in their impressive amount of high-scoring, dominant victories in recent weeks with the 6-1 win over Watford on Sunday just the latest in a string of eye-catching results.
The squad, then, looks good but our landlord reckons these two ins and outs would ensure they kick on from January…
In: Maxime Lopez
The young Marseille attacking midfielder is attracting a lot of interest around Europe and has been dubbed the ‘new Samir Nasri’ given his progression with the south of France side.
He will be 19 by the time the January window opens and Liverpool should make sure they are at the front of the queue to sign him, as Klopp will be able to mould him into an already young and exciting side.
Out: Mamadou Sakho
Sakho was a real fan favourite last season as the Frenchman helped the Reds get to the Europa League final, and scored against Borussia Dortmund in the epic 4-3 win in the quarter final.
A lot has happened since then, though, and the centre-half is well out of Klopp’s favour right now to the extent where it looks like he may never play for the club again. If that’s the case it’s time to move.
In: Christian Pulisic
Like the aforementioned Lopez, Pulisic is one of the most exciting prospects in Europe right now and would have a chance of making it to the top with any big club, as he looks set to do with Dortmund right now.
However, with the German side struggling to forge a challenge to Bayern Munich this season once again he may want to move on and Klopp could persuade him Liverpool is where his future lies.
Out: Alberto Moreno
It’s not inconceivable that Moreno will leave in January given that he can’t get into the side ahead of unorthodox left-back James Milner.
As per usual the former Aston Villa man has taken on his new role with minimum fuss and maximum professionalism to ensure he does a good job, and that’s left the Spaniard in the cold.
It’s probably best that he leaves the Reds in the very near future.
