Liverpool: Reds after Dayot Upamecano

L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) say that Liverpool are interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

The report says that the 21-year-old will be allowed to leave for €60m (£52.4m) in the summer, but he does not yet know where he wants to go.

They have added that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Italian sides have been in touch, whilst Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have all made their interest in the Frenchman known.

As it stands, the Reds already have two fantastic centre-backs at their disposal in Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – before the current pandemic led to football being suspended, they had kept nine clean sheets in their last 12 Premier League games.

However, the Netherlands international is already 28 years old and, although he is nowhere near ready to call time on his career at the top, he will not be around forever, and when he is to be replaced, Jurgen Klopp will need absolute top quality – Upamecano could provide that.

So far this term, he has averaged a very impressive WhoScored rating of 7.23 in the Bundesliga across 21 appearances, averaging 2.1 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game. He also has an 88% pass accuracy, which is not far off van Dijk’s 89.2%.

Whilst he would not come cheap, top quality is expensive, and Upamecano is definitely worth the risk.
