According to reports in the Daily Mail, Premiership new boys QPR have been offered former Premiership duo, Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill. The two socceroos are set to be among five players to be offloaded by Galatasary this summer after failing to have their contracts extended.
The veteran’s are familiar with the rigours of England’s top league and would add valuable experience and know how to Warnock’s squad. Kewell, 32, first burst onto the scene at Leeds United as a 19 year old. Spending 7 years at the Yorkshire club, eventually joining Liverpool in 2003. His time at Anfield was a frustrating one, never truly replicating the form which made him one of the world’s hottest properties.
Neill spent 15 years in England, originally plying his trade at the New Den with Milwall. His six years in south London attracted the interest of Blackburn, with the tenacious defender signing for the premiership club in 2001. One of the most consistent performers over his 6 years at Ewood Park, he left in somewhat acrimonious circumstances. Joining West Ham in 2007, Neill was accused of simply joining the Hammers for financial reasons.
This failed to slow Neill’s ascent to club captain, which was completed in a mere matter of months. Leading the side through the next two seasons. His time in England ended fairly unspectacularly as he spent a season on loan at Everton, teaming up with International team mate Tim Cahill.
These potential signings could be a shrewd bit of business for Neil Warnock. In Neill they would posses a highly competitive individual who thrives on the intensity of the Premier League. If Kewell can avoid any injury concerns, then he could supplement QPR’s attacking options.
Perhaps not from the start, but a cameo role would allow the once much wanted winger’s ability and technical prowess to flourish in the vital closing stages of games, which inevitably tend to decide the fate of the newly-promoted clubs. Providing two men in the twilight of their careers, a chance to make their mark on the premier league once more.
