Welcome Lascelles: The potential new-look 2017 Liverpool defence

Located at the bar in the Transfer Tavern, you’ll often find our Liverpool supporting punters talking about their worries this season.

While the Reds look like potential title-winners when pouring forward, their leaky defence looks like undermining any aspirations Jurgen Klopp truly has of landing a first Premier League title.

The capture of Joel Matip looks to have gone some way in rectifying that, though the classy Cameroonian alone cannot prevent goals from shipping in.

With that in mind, our Merseyside locals have been delighted to read reports linking their beloved Kop titans with a move for Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles.

The 23-year-old has come on leaps and bounds since Rafa Benitez handed him the captaincy at St. James’ Park, emerging as a resolute central stopper who can get involved in build-up play.

As a bright young English talent, the ex-Nottingham Forest man is an exciting player and would certainly prove a good signing for Liverpool.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the dream Liverpool defence containing Jamaal Lascelles.

RB: Nathaniel Clyne

Nathaniel Clyne’s importance to this Liverpool side simply cannot be underestimated.

The England international is as ‘heavy metal’ as they come, pushing forward with intent, while also being a strong defender in his own right.

Though right-back is barely the most glamorous of positions, Clyne is utterly vital.

CB: Joel Matip

Joel Matip has had a huge impact since joining from Schalke and what a bargain he’s looking like on Merseyside.

His towering presence in the backline, coupled with his masterful passing range is a significant improvement to the defence we saw crumble oh so often last term.

CB: Jamaal Lascelles

Clearly enjoying life as the main man at Newcastle, the 23-year-old is still somewhat of a raw talent and prone to the odd mistake.

Still, it appears Lascelles is a born leader and would certainly provide another ariel presence to Liverpool, especially when defending corners.

Has a huge future ahead of him.

LB: James Milner

It appears James Milner is SO good at football, that he actually perform in other people’s positions better than them.

An unusual choice at left-back at the start of the season, though the 30-year-old is thoroughly dependable in that berth.
