Our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pretty resigned to a season of what might have been once again this year.

You could apply this season so far to many that have gone before for the Gunners after initial good form has once again fallen foul of inconsistency and a lack of mental toughness.

Indeed, nothing quite summed that up as well as their mid-week result against Watford where they lost at home 2-1 in a shocking display.

The men from the Emirates just couldn’t find anything to get themselves back in the game after going 2-0 down at home to the Hornets and it once again highlighted the weaknesses in the squad.

There’s issues as always for Arsene Wenger to sort out, then, and our landlord reckons these two in particular need to be sorted out before they can win the Premier League title once again…

Complacency

Our landlord simply will not entertain the idea that the likes of Mesut Ozil is a world class player until consistency is found.

Only Alexis Sanchez really does it on a regular basis with the German and the like performing often only against the small teams and going missing regularly against the big boys. Until Arsene Wenger can get his players to step and do that the Gunners won’t be winning the league title.

Contract situations

There’s a real state of flux at the Emirates at the moment and it’s clearly not doing anyone any favours.

Few clubs at this level would let their best players’ contracts run down unless there was a significant issue so it makes no sense as to why they haven’t got the Chilean on a new deal. Meanwhile, Wenger’s contract is running down, too, so he needs to make a decision so the Gunners can get their act together ASAP.
