West Ham United are ready to trigger the release clause of Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez in January, that is according to a report from Spanish news outlet AS.
The 22-year-old will reportedly cost the Hammers a fee of €30 million (£25.7 million).
Nunez has spent the last couple of seasons trying to break into the first team at the San Mames Stadium, but he has struggled to hold down a starting berth.
Indeed, this season he has started just five of Bilbao’s 18 La Liga games, although he did play 90 minutes as they kept a clean sheet against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in their most recent outing (Transfermarkt).
A centre-back may well be on Manuel Pellegrini’s wish list in January, given that they have shipped 28 goals this term in just 17 matches (BBC Sport).
However, it seems that most West Ham fans are a little sceptical that their board would fork out so much money for the young defender.
Here is how some reacted to the transfer link on Twitter…
You lost me at €30m. Our board? In January?
