West Ham face Niclas Füllkrug transfer decision after striker’s stunning revival

Share

West Ham United have endured their fair share of frustration in the striker market over the years, with several expensive forwards failing to deliver the goals needed to make a lasting impact in east London.

From underwhelming signings to costly recruitment mistakes, finding a reliable goalscorer has regularly proved a difficult task for the Hammers.

Niclas Füllkrug was supposed to help solve that problem when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2024, but injuries and inconsistent performances prevented him from making the desired impression.

Now, however, the German striker is rediscovering his scoring touch back in the Bundesliga, leaving West Ham with an important decision over his future.

West Ham Face Niclas Füllkrug Transfer Dilemma

According to Sky Sport Germany, Werder Bremen are keen to keep Füllkrug beyond the end of his current loan spell after the 33-year-old made an impressive return to the club.

The Germany international has quickly become a fan favourite again, scoring in four consecutive Bundesliga matches and finding the net against former club Borussia Dortmund in a dramatic 2-2 draw. His recent performances have strengthened Bremen’s desire to retain him for next season.

Füllkrug returned to Werder on a season-long loan from West Ham in the summer after an unsuccessful spell at AC Milan. His previous struggles in England had raised questions about his future at the London Stadium, but his resurgence in familiar surroundings has demonstrated that he still has plenty to offer.

However, any permanent move could prove complicated. Sky Sport Germany reports that Bremen do not have an option to buy the striker, meaning negotiations with West Ham would be required to extend his stay.

Füllkrug remains under contract with the Hammers until 2028, giving the English club control over his future. His wages are another potential obstacle, with the forward having already accepted a financial reduction to facilitate his return to Bremen.

West Ham Must Decide Whether to Sell or Reintegrate Striker

Much could depend on West Ham’s plans for the forward next summer. If the club believes Füllkrug can still contribute to their attacking options, his impressive form in Germany could give him an opportunity to revive his career in England.

Alternatively, the Hammers may decide that a permanent departure represents the best outcome for all parties, particularly if Bremen are prepared to negotiate a suitable fee.

For now, discussions over the striker’s future have yet to begin, with both player and club focused on the current campaign.

Füllkrug’s revival will undoubtedly encourage Bremen to pursue a longer stay, but West Ham will have the final say. After his difficult spell in England, the club must now decide whether to give him another chance or cash in while his reputation is recovering.

Elsewhere, West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos could be the subject of a bid from other clubs in the New Year, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.
