Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips would be a good signing for West Ham in January, according to former Premier League striker Noel Whelan.
The Lowdown: West Ham keen on Phillips move
With Angelo Ogbonna out injured for many months, David Moyes is likely to delve into the transfer market for a new defender in January.
With key centre-backs now available for the Reds again, however, the 24-year-old has not featured at all in the league in 2021/22 and could look for a new challenge soon.

The Latest: Pundit tips defender to shine
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claimed that Phillips would be a strong addition at West Ham, having shown that he can perform at the top level of English football. The 46-year-old said of the defender:
“He’s a player who has shown he can handle the Premier League and can handle playing on a big stage.
“He got that experience last year with all the injuries at Liverpool. I think he did really well when you consider the massive pressure of playing at Anfield and pulling on that famous Liverpool shirt.
“I thought he handled himself impeccably.
“Moyes has got a knack of identifying good, British players. He knows what he wants in the squad. He knows which players he’s going to be able to improve and progress.
“Moyes has built a really strong team full of players who will work really hard to win football games, and Phillips can slot right into that.”
The Verdict: Is he good enough?
While Phillips deserves praise for his efforts last season – Jamie Redknapp has described him as ‘unbelievable’ – there are doubts over whether or not he is good enough for a West Ham side with top-four aspirations.
There is a reason why he is well down the pecking order at Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez all deemed far stronger options.
At 24, he is still a relative unknown with just 45 senior appearances, which speaks volumes; and if he were to join the Hammers, it would most likely be as a squad player rather than a regular starter.
