Speaking to Sky Sports, via HITC, pundit Paul Merson has tipped free agent Diego Costa as a striker who is ‘perfect for West Ham’ – going on to say that he could be the ‘missing link’ for manager David Moyes as the club ponder new additions in January.
News has emerged that Costa terminated his deal with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid by mutual consent, with an array of clubs around the globe now gifted an opportunity to land his signature with no extra costs, bar his hefty salary.
Should West Ham sign Diego Costa?
Yes, get it done GSB
No, better options out there
Merson tips Costa move
The former Premier League hitman, who is proven in England’s top flight with 52 goals in total, could be up for grabs from West Ham’s perspective now that he is available to enter negotiations.
Merson, in an interview with Sky, has claimed that Costa would be the ‘perfect’ signing for GSB in January – coming as the club reportedly ponder bringing in forward additions.
“He would be great for West Ham, perfect for West Ham, absolutely perfect,” explained the former Arsenal star.
“The way West Ham play at the moment, he could be the missing link, he could be the missing link.
“I think he is a phenomenal football player, but he is a warrior as well on top of that.”
Transfer Tavern take
Described as ‘unbelievable‘ by ex-Chelsea teammate and Flamengo left-back Filipe Luis, the Spaniard could indeed be what West Ham are missing in the forward positions.
A prolific goalscorer, he could also sign up at the London Stadium for nothing – with the only obstacle being his wage demands.
It is unclear whether the 32-year-old would take a significant pay cut from his last reported salary of £270,000-per-week, but what is clear is the danger that he would add for Moyes’ side.
Whether or not the Hammers manage to get a deal done, or even attempt to, remains to be seen – but Merson has tipped him to be ‘perfect’ for the club.
