West Ham United: Away fans will be allowed to attend European games

West Ham United will be allowed supporters at their first-ever Europa League group stage game after UEFA confirmed the return of away fans.

The Lowdown: Slow return of spectators

David Moyes’ side qualified for the Europa League group stages for the first time in their history after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.

This campaign, where they have been victorious in two of their opening three games, the Hammers have been boosted by the return of a full London Stadium after over a year away.

After finding out that Dinamo Zagreb, Rapid Wien and Genk will be their opponents in Europe, supporters had initially been unable to purchase tickets for the trips to Croatia, Austria and Belgium.

The Latest: UEFA confirms news

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol broke the good news on Twitter, saying: ‘UEFA to announce away fans will be allowed at European club competition games from next week’.

Moyes’ side travel to Zagreb next week after their trip to Southampton on Saturday and UEFA’s announcement will mean they can have their following inside the Stadion Maksimir to witness their clubs first-ever European group stage game.

The news will be music to the ears of the West Ham players and fans, with the announcement another step forward in the full return of supporters at football games after full capacities have been allowed in the Premier League this season.

The Verdict: Fantastic for club

Having their supporters at away games on Thursday nights will be an added incentive for the likes of Michail Antonio and Declan Rice.

The Irons have been handed a tough draw and visiting these places without the backing of their fans would be a difficult ask for any side.

The atmosphere amongst the club at the moment after a strong start to the season will mean next Thursday’s trip to Croatia will be a day to remember for the lucky travelling supporters, although it may be later in the other two clashes we really see the impact, with the short notice for next week perhaps an issue.

In other news, some West Ham fans are sceptical about the latest takeover news. Find out more here.
