West Ham made some stupid signings in the summer window that have turned out to be right donkeys and the club’s punters here at the Transfer Tavern are hoping they won’t make the same mistakes again!

The Irons fans have again been dealt a big blow as last week it was confirmed that Dimitri Payet doesn’t want to play for the club anymore.

But that doesn’t mean that he’ll be leaving the club anytime soon as Slaven Bilic appears to have no intention of selling him.

You can understand why he would be aggrieved, too, having given Payet the chance that many other clubs wouldn’t give him.

That aside, West Ham really must ensure they invest for the long term and bring in players with English football experience that can help the club to improve their current league position.

With that in mind, then, our landlord reckons they must ensure that they steer clear of these two stupid signings this January…

Patrice Evra

The former Man United defender and current Juventus full-back has been a superb player over the past ten years or so but now, coming into the final part of career, he’s seeking one last move.

The veteran would be a great addition to most teams but not the Hammers, they already have Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku who are brilliant players for the left-back position. They are both much younger than Evra and if West Ham and Bilic are planning for the future this would just disrupt that.

Jermain Defoe

This will be a controversial choice, of that we are sure!

Sure, he is a proven goalscorer and he’d likely get goals for West Ham but there’s no point paying up for a man who is in his mid-30’s. The Hammers should go for a striker with much longer shelf-life than for someone who has a few years left. And, anyway, if they do want him they could wait until the summer to see if Sunderland have gone down when he’d be cheaper.
