Dedryck Boyata and his future at Celtic is a question that appears to have been one for a while.
The Belgium international has excelled in Scotland with The Bhoys and has been an ever-present in their team as they look to continue their dominance of domestic football.
The 28-year-old, however, has a rocky period this season, when it comes to off-the-field concerns, something that had initially upset many of the fanbase at Celtic Park.
Boyata was believed to have been the subject of interest from several clubs around Europe following his performances for Belgium in the World Cup, where he helped guide Roberto Martinez’s men to a third-place finish.
Having failed to get his summer move, he infamously no-showed against AEK Athens in a crucial Champions League qualifier as many had felt he was trying to force his way out of the club, although he hit back and stated that he was injured, per The BBC.
However, he has since returned to the side and has been an essential member of the defence once again as Celtic continue their quest to win their eighth successive Scottish Premiership title, as well as progress in the Europa League.
Boyata has produced a number of impressive performances, however, his time in Glasgow is surely coming to an end.
The 28-year-old is yet to sign a new contract to extend his stay at the club, and despite not being sold in January, it would appear that he will leave in the summer on a free transfer as things stand.
However, he could still leave Parkhead as a favourite with the fans if he continues to produce the type of performances everyone knows he can.
Although it appears he was allegedly trying to force a move away from the club in the summer, which will make it hard for fans to forgive, he could still be remembered fondly.
If Boyata helps them to win the Scottish Premiership once again, as well as edging past Valencia and progressing further in the Europa League, then it could ease the pain his almost guaranteed departure will cause.
And, who knows, Celtic may be able to finally convince the 28-year-old that his future remains at Celtic Park after all.
