Our landlord certainly believes so and, with Mohamed Salah already agreeing his transfer to the club, this positive start has excited all the Reds in the Tavern.

They believe the addition of quality depth within their side will surely make them contenders for numerous trophies once the new season comes around.

The hope is now is that none of these players flop and believe us, the Reds in the Tavern have seen their side made many blunders in the transfer market in recent years.

This is a point that has been echoed by our landlord and he has started listing the Liverpool transfers he believes to have flopped, stating that these individuals really looked out of their depth whilst at club.

Many quality players have been discussed linking to this and it really has sparked an interesting debate within the Transfer Tavern.

The debate is now almost over and with the help of his resident Liverpool fans, our landlord has listed the two most bizarre signings made by Liverpool in the last fifteen years.

Andy Carroll

Signed for £35million on the same day as when a certain Luis Suarez joined Liverpool, Andy Carroll never quite fitted in with the Reds’ system returning just six goals in forty-four appearances.

Carroll was signed initially to replace Fernando Torres who joined Chelsea on deadline day in January 2011 but the Geordie born striker had to wait another two months for his debut due to an injury he sustained whilst at his former club, Newcastle.

The injury set the tone for Carroll’s Liverpool career and he just never quite got going before joining current club, West Ham in 2013.

Christian Benteke

Benteke was initially signed to replace Luis Suarez, though the big Belgian has a somewhat different playing style to the Uruguayan ace, which meant this transfer never really worked out.

Signed for £32.5million from Aston Villa, Jurgen Klopp looked to make Liverpool’s money back on Benteke by selling him to his current club, Crystal Palace for a deal that may raise to worth £32million.

It was evident that Benteke would never fit into Klopp’s playing style following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, who had initially signed him.

Of course, the Reds in the Tavern accept Benteke is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League – they just don’t understand why the Liverpool hierarchy sanctioned a move for a player that would never have fit into their playing style.
