Who Will Be Pulling The Points In The Rovers Return?

John Edwards 2 October 2012, 15:15 3 minutes read

Blackburn Rovers legends Tim Sherwood and Alan Shearer are amongst the bookies favourites to be installed as the new manager at Ewood Park.

The Lancashire club will look to appoint a new boss after the much maligned Steve Kean brought his 21 month spell in charge to and end on Friday night. Kean claimed he was forced to resign after his position at the club became ‘untenable’.

Rovers are currently fourth in the Championship with 15 points from eight games and have only lost once so far this season. Given the strong position and the players available there could well be a lot interest in the Ewood Park vacancy.

Former captain Tim Sherwood has been installed as the favourite to take the job by numerous bookmakers and Sky Bet have him priced at 2/1. Though Sky must know something the rest of us don’t, given that the Tottenham coach has dismissed stories linking him with his former club as nothing more than rumours.

Sherwood may be considered something of a gamble as he has no previous experience, but after the Kean debacle he could be a risk worth taking. He knows the club, the fans and if he rises to the challenge of management could be a very good appointment.

Alan Shearer is another ex player to be linked with the job and Sky Bet have the former England captain as second favourite to take the job if his old team mate doesn’t. Shearer is thought to be looking for a return to management despite having turned down a chance to manage the club prior to Paul Ince’s appointment.

Like Sherwood he is another risk. His only previous experience saw him fail to save his beloved Newcastle from relegation. However, that was an uphill task and with Blackburn looking to compete in the Championship it could be a chance for Shearer to prove himself.

At 7/2 Mick McCarthy is a strong candidate to take the job according to Sky Bet and for the owners and Blackburn supporters alike he is nothing if a safe option. The former Wolves boss knows what it takes to guide a team to promotion to the Premier League and that experience could be invaluable if Rovers are to bounce straight back.

The treatment of Kean and the uncertainty that comes with working for the Venkys may not appeal to McCarthy and he may need some convincing but given his experience he may usurp club legends Sherwood and Shearer and take the job.
