Why Chelsea won’t try and sign Victor Osimhen again this summer

It’s a bit difficult to assess how Chelsea have performed this season.

On one hand, Enzo Maresca has guided a young — the youngest in the Premier League — and bloated squad firmly into the race for Champions League football next season, an achievement most fans would have gladly accepted at the start of the campaign.

On the other, despite their strong position near the top of the table, Maresca’s style — which leans heavily on fluid, possession-based play, frequent and often confusing squad rotation, and a failure to get the best out of top talents like Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson — has attracted widespread criticism.

Regardless of how you view things, one fact remains clear: if Chelsea are to push on next season and challenge for the title, they must address several problem areas, particularly up front. Jackson’s 10 Premier League goals this term have simply not been enough to fire the Blues to glory.

It’s a position they attempted to strengthen last summer, reportedly agreeing a deal with Napoli to sign Victor Osimhen — only for the Nigerian striker to pull out over wage demands and instead join Galatasaray on loan for the season.

After a stellar campaign in Turkey, where he has scored over 30 goals across all competitions, it was widely expected that Chelsea would renew their interest. With Osimhen unlikely to remain in Turkey beyond the end of the season, another move seemed inevitable.

However, that no longer appears to be the case.

Why won’t Chelsea sign Osimhen?

Despite their long-standing interest in Osimhen and their urgent need for attacking reinforcements, a new report from The Telegraph claims that Chelsea have decided against pursuing the striker this summer.

According to the newspaper, Chelsea are “concerned about [Osimhen’s] attitude,” and Maresca has now “ruled out” making a second attempt to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

Exactly what concerns Chelsea have about Osimhen’s attitude is unclear. However, their decision to withdraw has now opened the door for Manchester United to make a move, with the Red Devils also desperately in need of a new frontman.

In a separate report, the Manchester Evening News claims that United have agreed to activate Osimhen’s £51 million release clause at Napoli.

For Chelsea fans, the hope will be that if Osimhen does join United, he won’t come back to haunt them next season.
