For many in the Transfer Tavern the dream of Lionel Messi at Manchester United is a mere fairytale they imagine when they’ve had too many- but the Old Trafford side should definitely have a pop at signing him.
The fact of the matter, as has been widely reported, is that Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is not happy in Spain at the moment due to being under investigation for tax fraud- something that he has played no part it.
With the government on his back, Messi could be tempted into a new venture. After all, he’s won everything he possibly could with the Catalan side and has set record after record in Spain. There’s a case to say he’s done it all.
Now 28-years-old, the South American is enjoying the prime years of his career. However having won everything there is to win with Barcelona, how could the little maestro improve on what he’s done so far?
The answer- move to Manchester United. It’s a match made in heaven with Messi looking to prove himself as the best player in the world bar none and United desperately seeking a marquee signing that will put them back amongst Europe’s big boys.
Messi’s two-and-fro battle with Cristiano Ronaldo has been thrilling to watch but the Real Madrid star has one over Messi due to the fact he’s played, and been successful, in England and Spain. That’s possibly the one thing Ronaldo has over his great rival.
However Messi could change that if he were to come to England. He’d join a United side ready to prove themselves again domestically and in Europe after enduring a barren few years after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
With reports suggesting United are happy to pay an extortionate fee for the likes of Thomas Muller, Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar- why not add Messi to the list?
Louis Van Gaal wants to leave a legacy at United and hand a talented squad over to his predecessor when he retires and the perfect way to do that is to land Messi. After all, the worst case scenario is he says no – think of what there is to gain!
