Wolves: Danny Mills suggests winter spending spree could result in summer exodus

Pundit's choice

TalkSPORT pundit Danny Mills believes that the winter signing of Daniel Podence could be a hint that Wolves might be set for a summer exodus.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds United defender claimed that several Wolves player could become the subject of big-money bids from rival clubs in the summer transfer window and that Nuno Espirito Santo’s productive January could be a sign that he is readying first-team replacements for next season.

The former England international said: “They’re building something. Nuno Espirito Santo is there, they’re good at getting players in, their recruitment policy has been very, very good and they’re starting to build a squad now,” with Mills later adding: “They’ve got players also that they know that might attract big offers in the summer so getting extra bodies in now, getting them into the club and used to the way that they play I think is good business. They’re preparing for the future, whether a couple of players get pinched.”

Planning for the summer transfer window in the winter is nothing new for managers as explained by David Ornstein of The Athletic, but Wolves might be able to keep hold of some of their big-name players should the club manage to claim European football for a second consecutive season.

Although players in the squad have already played in the Champions League such as Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Leander Dendoncker (per Transfermarkt), the atmosphere Nuno has created around the club could entice some star names to remain at Wolves and try and push the club to Europe’s elite competition.

Mills might be onto something with Nuno planning for some departures in the summer with the signing of Podence, but given how things could go for Wolves this season with the West Midlands club in with a shout of claiming a Champions League spot (per the Premier League’s official website), it is seemingly unlikely that any big names would leave in the summer.

Wolves fans, can the club keep hold of its best players? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
