Wolves enquire about “underrated” Bundesliga “pitbull” to replace Rayan Ait-Nouri

Wolverhampton Wanderers endured a season of two halves in 2024/25.

Under Gary O’Neil, the first stretch of the campaign saw them struggling for consistency, often flirting with the relegation zone. However, the appointment of Vítor Pereira midway through the season sparked a notable turnaround.

While not perfect, the team looked far more organised and confident under Pereira’s guidance, eventually climbing to a respectable 16th place, comfortably avoiding the drop.

Now, heading into a crucial summer rebuild, Wolves are navigating a period of transition. They’ve already suffered two major blows, with Matheus Cunha joining Manchester United and Rayan Aït-Nouri completing a move to Manchester City — the club’s two standout players gone in one window.

Reinforcements are clearly needed. The arrivals of Fer López and Club World Cup standout Jhon Arias have added promise, and now, it appears Wolves are eyeing a third major addition.

Wolves Enquire About Julian Ryerson

According to a new report from Sky Sports Germany, Wolves have made an enquiry into the availability of Julian Ryerson, the versatile full-back currently at Borussia Dortmund.

While nothing has advanced beyond initial contact, the enquiry signals serious interest from the West Midlands side. Sunderland, who have also been extremely active this summer, are said to have registered interest in the Norwegian defender as well.

Despite extending his contract with Dortmund until 2028 just last October, Ryerson is reportedly open to a move, with the Premier League believed to be his dream destination. Sky claims he’s comfortable in Dortmund and values his role at the club, but the allure of English football may be hard to resist.

Ryerson has been a key figure under Dortmund manager Niko Kovač, making an impressive 47 appearances across all competitions last season. His high work rate, tenacity, and tactical discipline have made him a coach’s favourite — not just under Kovač, but also under his predecessor, Edin Terzić.

Terzić once hailed Ryerson as a hidden gem, stating: “Julian is a little underrated. But we are very happy to have him on our team. He works hard for the team and does his job really well. Every team needs a player like him. He’s like a pitbull on the pitch.”

The Norwegian’s no-nonsense style, relentless energy, and defensive resilience would make him a perfect fit for the Premier League — and especially for a side like Wolves, who are looking to re-establish their identity under Pereira.

Crucially, he could also be the ideal replacement for Aït-Nouri, bringing a different profile but offering the same level of tenacity, consistency, and commitment down the flank.
