Many Wolves fans were critical towards Vitinha during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton on Friday night.
Typically a defensive midfielder, manager Nuno Espirito Santo took the unusual step of starting the 20-year-old on the left side of a front three, with Fabio Silva and Morgan Gibbs-White making up the trio.
Vitinha, who is currently on loan from FC Porto, was brought off in the 69th minute having shown little attacking prowess on the night, and also receiving lengthy treatment during the first half.
Should Vitinha start for Wolves?
Despite playing out of position, supporters were still sceptical about Vitinha’s overall ability, with one fan, in particular, suggesting Wolves should save money by not exercising their option to buy the Portuguese midfielder.
Vitinha scrutinised by these Wolves fans
“Disagree think Gibbs-white was miles better than Vitinha tonight, takes risks tries things, Vitinha is awful!”
“That’s harsh on Gibbs-White he has been the best the front three, Vitinha done nothing all game #wwfc”
“Oh and apparently we played 4 midfielders so was Nuno going for a 541? Vitinha never got in the game, MGW was his usual anonymous self apart from the odd flick, dive and wrong decision, and Silva was doing a terrible impression of a target man. #wwfc”
“Let’s not waste 20m on Vitinha and I will personally drive Gibbs-White back to Swansea”
“Of all the people to retain possession he picks MGW and Vitinha who can’t pass 2 yards”
“I’m always gonna back Nuno in the long run but that’s another game he’s gotta take the blame for again. I’m still unconvinced with Vitinha, no better than MGW and did nothing. MGW was our only threat today (until the subs), could’ve won a pen too. Should’ve gone for it IMO.”
