Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Austin Samuels is set to seal a loan move to Aberdeen on Tuesday, according to a report from the Daily Record.

The lowdown

Samuels spent time on loan at League Two Bradford City last season but was only afforded six league starts. His solitary goal came in a 7-0 FA Cup rout of non-league Tonbridge (via Transfermarkt).

With his involvement limited, Wolves chose to cut the loan short in January. He played for the Under-23s for the remainder of the season and was hailed as 'excellent' by coach James Collins after a 4-0 win over Newcastle in April.

There was also a run-out for Samuels in pre-season as a late substitute against Crewe Alexandra.

The latest

Aberdeen have agreed a season-long loan deal with Wolves, and intriguingly it will include an option to buy.

The player travelled north of the border on Monday to complete the formalities of the transfer. If all goes to plan, the deal should be tied up on Tuesday.

The hope is that Samuels will add pace to the Dons' attack and nicely 'complement' the incumbent pair of Christian Ramirez and Jay Emmanuel Thomas.

The verdict

The fact that Wolves have agreed to an option to buy indicates Samuels hasn't done enough to persuade the club that he's a future star.

He has excelled at youth level, but the difficulty lies in making that transition to the men's game, and the Bradford loan has to be viewed as a failure.

Still, he's now joining a side that will compete for the top three places in the Scottish top-flight and could feature in the Europa Conference League, so it's a pretty good move for all parties - including the player himself - to assess his potential.
