Brahim Diaz is widely considered as one of Manchester City’s most decorated youth prospects by those propping up our bar.
The resident City fans in the Transfer Tavern are somewhat alarmed by the report that they could lose one of the club’s most valuable and talented academy talents to Real Madrid.
Comments have emerged in the Daily Express from manager Pep Guardiola, who has conceded that the Citizens would be powerless to prevent Diaz from making a move to the Spanish capital.
“I know – because we spoke with him many times – the commitment from that guy, Brahim, to stay here and play for Manchester City because Manchester City gave him the opportunity to start to compete in the high level.
“He grew up, his family are happy here, but you never know.
“We are going to try, of course, to hear him but he has to know at Madrid, Dortmund, here, the top level, it is not easy to play.
“In the end it will be decided by his performances on the pitch.”
This news is particularly concerning as Man City have only recently lost another of their prized youth players, Jadon Sancho – who was preordained for great things at City – transferred to Borussia Dortmund for a total of £8M.
Despite the promise and the potential that Diaz flaunts, the 18-year-old has yet to make a senior appearance for the Citizens. Pep Guardiola should consider utilising his talents as a utility player or risk losing one of the club’s young stars, much to the chagrin of our resident Citizens.
Landlord’s verdict
Guardiola has a treasured and impressive history of youth development, particularly at Barca where the likes of Pedro were promoted to the first-team setup, and they thrived. We’ve yet to see a young player make a purposeful breakthrough at City; they can ill-afford losing another young star.
