In an exclusive interview with German magazine Kicker, summer Tottenham target Wout Weghorst has opened up over Daniel Levy’s ‘serious’ interest in bringing him to north London before signing Carlos Vinicius.

Weghorst, who was listed as a candidate to serve as backup to star striker Harry Kane, has now admitted that the interest was ‘serious with Tottenham’.

Along with other forwards on Tottenham’s radar, including the likes of Ollie Watkins, Callum Wilson, Arkadiusz Milik and Habib Diallo, Weghorst was touted with a move before Levy opted for Vinicius instead.
Indeed, Spurs signed the Benfica star on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy next summer, putting an end to the club’s 14 month-long wait for another centre-forward.
After Fernando Llorente was released in the summer of 2019, Kane was Spurs’ only natural senior striking option, but the addition of Vinicius has slightly eased the pressure on his shoulders.
Candid interview
Speaking to Kicker, the 6 foot 5 powerhouse admitted that a move to the Premier League is ‘still a dream’ after ‘serious’ interest from Tottenham.
“I can be honest,” says Weghorst in the interview.
“Of course I knew that there was interest left and right. It was serious with Tottenham, I was a candidate. The Premier League is still a dream of mine.”

Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the Dutch international scored an impressive 20 goals in all competitions last season, leaving little wonder why he was shortlisted by Levy.
An imposing colossus, Weghorst arguably fitted Jose Mourinho’s mould of a physical centre-forward, but Lilywhites won’t be too regretful over missing out on his signature given the acquisition of Vinicius, who is an equally prolific figure.
