While the hangover from last season’s late collapse has reared its ugly head again this term, the Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are in good spirits of late.
Though Mauricio Pochettino’s side are some way off the pace in the title race, Spurs have turned in some better performances recently under the Argentine.
Granted, their summer business wasn’t as smart as in years gone by, though the fast-approaching January transfer window has caused excitement amongst our drinkers.
It’s clear Pochettino’s side need some reinforcement in the New Year and while it may be an expensive time to buy, could perhaps light a spark on Hotspur Way.
Finishing in the Top 4 isn’t out of reach just yet and further additions could well help their cause on that front.
In order to bring one in, however, Pochettino may well be forced to ship someone out in order to make room.
So, with that in mind, here’s a closer look at Spurs’ January business our drinkers think they should conduct.
IN – Ross Barkley
The Evening Standard suggested recently that Pochettino is casting keen eyes over Everton midfielder Ross Barkley in order to bring in a player who can bring the ball through at pace from deep.
During his time at White Hart Lane, the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Kane have all improved immeasurably under the Argentine’s watch.
So, perhaps that could bring the best out in a man who has often failed to wholly convince, though clearly possesses bags of natural ability.
Likely to be expensive, but what a player Barkley could be.
OUT – Tom Carroll
Obviously, Spurs aren’t going to spend upwards of £30m on Barkley without making some room in midfield first.
To that end, surely his potential move to the capital would spell the end of Tom Carroll’s time there.
The likes of Harry Winks have usurped the 24-year-old in the pecking order, despite him being used as an impact sub reasonably often last term.
Swansea City, where he once enjoyed quite a productive loan spell, have been touted as a potential destination.
