Liverpool have started the season in blistering fashion and have shown that they are legitimate title contenders this season.
The Reds have won three games out of three, scored seven goals while conceding none. Moreover, new signings Naby Keita, Xerdan Sahqiri and Alisson have all shown that they’ll add serious quality to the side. Fabinho hasn’t featured yet but over the course of a season, he will be a great addition to Klopp’s title-chasing side.
While the new players have shown that they’ll improve the squad, at the back, Joe Gomez, has been in great form since the start of the season and as a result, he has been called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
For most of the summer, Liverpool were linked with Croatian defender, Domagoj Vida. Although the Croatian had a great World Cup, Gomez’s performances have shown that Liverpool already had a superb centre-back waiting to partner Virgil van Dijk.
The Breakdown
Good with the ball at his feet, quick and strong, Gomez has all the tools to be a great centre-back for the Reds and has been so good that Dejan Lovren hasn’t had a chance to break into the team.
In partnership with Van Dijk, Gomez Klopp seems to have a pairing that could be one of the best in the league, add Alisson playing behind them and Liverpool’s woes might be solved.
After such a strong start to the season, an England call-up for Gomez was always going to be likely and it shows that the Reds didn’t need Vida.
