Liverpool have had a relatively quiet transfer window compared to last summer, and with a month remaining to complete their business, there is still plenty of work to be done.
New manager Andoni Iraola is currently fine-tuning his tactical approach during the Reds’ pre-season tour of the United States and has guided the side to back-to-back victories in their opening friendlies.
However, while the search for Mohamed Salah’s successor continues, with Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola remaining the club’s top target, fresh reports have revealed that a move for a new defender is also under consideration.

It was reported earlier this week that Liverpool are interested in signing AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, with Newcastle United also competing for his signature.
Now, a new report from TuttoJuve has revealed that the Merseyside club have opened initial discussions with the Serie A side over a potential deal for the Chelsea academy graduate.
The publication claims Milan are attempting to convince Tomori to sign a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2027. However, should those talks fail, the Italian club would be open to selling the defender rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.
It is understood that discussions remain in the early stages and negotiations are not yet advanced, but Liverpool are keen to strengthen their defence and see Tomori as an attractive option.
Other reports have suggested that AC Milan have valued their defender at £24.9m.
Should Liverpool sign Fikayo Tomori?
While the headlines continue to focus on Liverpool’s search for Salah’s successor, strengthening the defence should be just as high a priority heading into the new season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson were all experienced figures at Anfield, but with the trio having moved on, Virgil van Dijk is now the only long-term starter remaining in the back line.
Although Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are exciting prospects for the future, Liverpool still need an experienced and dependable centre-back partnership if they are to improve on last season’s disappointing defensive performances.
Tomori – once described as “perfect” by Paolo Maldini – boasts a wealth of top-level experience, including a strong understanding of the Premier League from his time at Chelsea, as well as 32 Champions League appearances.
The 26-year-old is renowned for his exceptional recovery pace, one-v-one defending and tactical versatility.
Those qualities would make him well suited to Iraola’s aggressive style of football, allowing Liverpool to defend higher up the pitch while maintaining the athleticism needed to recover quickly during transitions.
With that being said, Liverpool cannot afford to overlook the importance of strengthening their defence while pursuing a replacement for Salah.
Tomori’s blend of experience, pace and Champions League pedigree would make him a smart addition to Iraola’s squad, and if a deal can be agreed, he could become a key figure in the club’s bid to return to the top of English and European football.
