Mark Warburton’s exit from Rangers recently wasn’t the most dignified one at all, though the Gers propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern are largely happy about it. 

While it may have been easier to wait until the end of the campaign, the former Brentford coach was looking like an increasingly popular figure at Ibrox after a number of poor performances in big games, as well some poor business conducted in the transfer market.

As you can well imagine, a number of names have been linked with a job that could promise any manager worth his salt so much, though it does come with its complications. With that in mind, perhaps the notion of handing the reigns on a full-time basis to current caretaker boss Graeme Murty isn’t as ridiculous notion as it may sound initially.

Indeed, here are TWO key reasons the Gers should consider him as their next manager.

Understands Scottish football

One of the major grievances with Mark Warburton was the aforementioned poor record he endured against the likes of Celtic, Hibernian, Aberdeen and Heart of Midlothian. While the Old Firm is obviously much-talked about, clashes with the other teams just mentioned are just as big a deal. Well, kind of.

Former Scotland international Murty will know all about the feeling of the Rangers fans when it comes to those games, having worked with the developmental squad too.

Director of football

Recent reports have suggested those at Ibrox are keen on the idea of appointing a director of football as they look to restore former glories to Ibrox. While finding a bigger name manager may be tempting, perhaps not everyone will be happy to work under such a structure.

Clearly, the Gers respect Murty’s work on the training pitch, so allowing him to focus on that while bringing in another head to help steer off the field matters going forward could be a wise move.
