2 players who absolutely need to follow Philipp Max to Liverpool in January if he joins

After a hugely frustrating draw for the Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern, the punters propping up our bar are hoping for some good news to take their minds off of things.

Indeed, our resident Reds often pray that Jurgen Klopp moves to strengthen his defence over the course of the January sales, having only brought in Andy Robertson during the summer. Though there’s been so much to shout about in an attacking sense, the defensive frailty remains as prevalent as ever at Anfield.

With that in mind, reports from the Daily Mail linking them with a move for Ausburg full-back Philipp Max have proven rather promising. Alberto Moreno continues to frustrate our local Kopites with his inconsistent performances and Robertson has struggled since his move, meaning left-back remains a problem position for the Reds.

Still, Max’s potential arrival alone wouldn’t be enough to fix all their problems, so here’s a look at TWO players who should follow him to Merseyside in the January sales.

Virgil van Dijk

Frequently linked with a move to Anfield, it’s absolutely imperative that Liverpool land the Southampton man. The Dutchman wouldn’t only be an improvement on the current crop of defenders at the club, his signing would be a massive mental boost, as well as give the Reds a natural leader.

Indeed, having him tighten up the defence could give the whole team a boost.

He’d be worth overpaying for, that’s for sure.

Stefan de Vrij

Another Dutch defender, Lazio star Stefan de Vrij would complement his compatriot. Neither Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip or Ragnar Klavan have ever proved overly convincing and de Vrij’s tactical flexibility could see Klopp switch between three and four at the back during games.

Though he’s recently agreed a new deal in Rome, the Oranje star could surely be tempted if Liverpool come splashing the cash.
