Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this weekend after seeing their side thump Brighton 5-1 at the AMEX Stadium, thus extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight matches, and at the same time moving back into the Premier League’s top four.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Seagulls off the back of sweeping aside Stoke City 3-0 at the bet365 Stadium in midweek, and they were again at their fluent best to see off the challenge posed by Chris Hughton’s Brighton. Two goals in the space of as many minutes from Emre Can and Roberto Firmino in the first half set them on their way, and further strikes from Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, as well as an own goal from Lewis Dunk, sealed a comprehensive victory for the Merseysiders, who moved above Arsenal into fourth in the Premier League following their defeat to Manchester United.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern this weekend, many of whom are eagerly anticipating their team’s encounter with Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday night, knowing that a point will secure their passage through to the last 16.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Barcelona are set to reignite their interest in Coutinho when the transfer window opens next month.
The Spanish giants failed with three big money bids over the summer as they sought after the talented Brazil international, and reports suggest that they will again test Liverpool’s resolve with another mega money offer, believed to be around €100 million.
And were Coutinho to indeed leave Anfield in the New Year, here are TWO other Liverpool stars who could follow him out of the Merseyside giants…
Emre Can
Emre Can’s future at Liverpool has been subject of speculation for a while now, what with the midfielder’s current contract at Anfield set to expire at the end of the campaign, and no extension as of yet agreed.
The 23-year-old made the move to Merseyside back in 2015 but struggled under former boss Brendan Rodgers, only to become a key member of the squad under current chief Klopp.
However, with no deal agreed and the threat of losing him for nothing come the summer, the Reds may look to cash in on the Germany international in the New Year, and with Juventus thought to be interested, it’s a deal which could well take place.
Daniel Sturridge
It’s just hasn’t quite happened for striker Daniel Sturridge since Klopp arrived at Liverpool, with the likes of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, and Roberto Firmino, and now Mohamed Salah, often preferred in the forward areas.
And given that the 28-year-old missed out on Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad, the former Chelsea and Manchester City forward knows that things must change if he is to make the World Cup in the summer, and that may involve changing clubs in January.
Ultimately, Sturridge needs minutes on the pitch and to be scoring regularly to make Southgate’s 23-man squad, and that doesn’t look like happening at Liverpool – thus, a move away looks to be his best option.
