The Manchester United fans, for the most part this season, have been up in arms at their captain’s performances for their club.
Wayne Rooney and where he plays and should he even play have been big talking points here in the Transfer Tavern, and it’s certainly caused some disagreements.
Some reckon he’s completely past it and needs to be got rid of as soon as is possible by manager Jose Mourinho, but other’s think his form is only temporary, and he’ll soon get things back on track and finding the net – he is nearly their all-time top scorer for a reason.
Whatever you think, people are going to agree or disagree because it’s such a huge topic but fortunately our landlord is here to rule over all of it and remain impartial, here are the TWO pros and TWO cons to United getting shot of Wayne Rooney.
Pro 1: Allows for younger players
Rooney in his current form and position is getting in the way of potential new stars coming through and shining.
At the end of the day the captain is only going to be about for a few more years and the Old Trafford side need to have a contingency plan ready.
They’ve seen Marcus Rashford burst through and fly the flag for their academy products so why not try and get some more of them in?
Con 1: Still a good player
The old saying form is temporary class is permanent springs to mind with Rooney.
He hasn’t simply lost his talent but is just out of form and looks low on confidence.
His ability to play in a number of positions has been way overused and people have been able to criticise him for it without good reason.
He’ll surely be back and United will be pleased when he is.
Pro 2: Gives Mourinho more control
It’s almost as if Jose Mourinho is too scared to take Rooney out of the side at the moment despite his struggles.
Why this is is up for debate but you have to say with him out of the side the Portuguese would probably be free to play the rest of his players where he wants them to be.
He’s yet to truly find a role for Rooney and could just think it’s best to offload him instead.
Con 2: Understands what it means to play for United
Being Manchester United captain and having a career at the club as long as Rooney has had suggests that you know a thing or two about playing at the highest level.
United need players that are going to get them back to title winning ways and have experience in the big games, so it would make very little sense indeed to just let someone with Rooney’s knowledge go.
