Red Devils here in the Tavern urge Mourinho to change his ways if they are to become genuine contenders for the title. 

Manchester United have always been arguably the biggest club in England, with their fan base floating all over the world from successes over the years. However, of late this is something that United fans haven’t been accustomed to. After experiencing the United of old, it just doesn’t seem right to see the only trophies being lifted by the side being the so-called Mickey mouse League Cups.

Indeed, as the 2017-2018 Premier League season into in to full flow, United seem to have dropped off the pace in recent weeks after picking up their first defeat in what arguably should have been a comfortable win. Having never really made it easy for themselves in recent times, it was Huddersfield’s turn to inflict a first defeat on Mourinho’s men in what was a poor first half performance for the Red Devils. Coming after a tough game away at Anfield last time out, its starting to look as if United have had some complacency starting to creep in.

One thing we all know is that Mourinho will always find a way, that’s exactly what he did last night as a slightly weakened United side enjoyed a solid performance, as they came away with a 2-0 victory at the Liberty Stadium. So, having tasted that winning feeling once again, the players will be hungry on improvement as they face arguably their toughest test yet, as they welcome the high flying Spurs to Old Trafford.

So with Man United on a slight early season mend, here’s a look at 2 things that Mourinho needs to fix before welcoming Spurs…

United style of play

Mourinho is highly known for his tactical prowess, game management and his ability to adapt to situations. For a man who has always played with a 4 back formation, he’s seen some change this season as most teams opt for a 3 at the back formation as wing backs become an increasing factor.

However, in the recent game at Anfield many United fans were somewhat disappointed with the way that he set up the team. For a side that are competing for the League title with the high flying Manchesterr City, you would of thought that every game would be looked upon as a must win with the form the Blue side of Manchester are enjoying. But he approached Liverpool as if they were a Championship side, as he just tells his players to sit back behind the ball to just simply stop Liverpool from scoring as they play for a draw.

This doesn’t have the makings of a side that want to win the League as 1 point for them puts them 2 more points a drift of City, as they don’t look like holding up. Having been outplayed for the 90 minutes at Anfield without looking like scoring, Liverpool managed 19 shots to United’s 6 and 63% possession compared to United’s 37 as they were outfought and outclassed by the opposition. Had it not been for the heroics of David De Gea with a fantastic reflex save then it would have been all over for the Manchester side.

So if United are to really challenge for the title then they are required to play the attacking, threatening football that we all know put them unbeaten through the first 8 Premier League matches. As they face a very attacking and dangerous Spurs side it would be underwhelming to see them set up the same way they did at Anfield.

Chopping and changing the team

Everyone knows that if you can find the right balance in a team, then consistency will bring you the correct results. However, Mourinho has made some slightly debatable decisions in the duration of the season so far, as arguably one of United’s world class attackers Anthony Martial sat out on the sidelines through lack of playing time. Along with the reoccurring inclusion of Belgian Marouane Fellaini, who many want to see the back of at the club.

In playing the same team in 2 straight games for the Red Devils, after scoring 5 goals in 2 games and not conceding the managerial mastermind made a somewhat surprising decision, as he made 4 changes to an already consistent performing side.

So if United are to maintain a winning streak then it’s vital that they can gain some team consistency to really give them time to gel together.
