3 players rated under £20m Warburton needs to sign for Rangers in January

Rangers boss Mark Warburton played down his side’s chances of winning the Scottish Premier League this season, following promotion during the last campaign, and early form suggests that he was probably right.

The Light Blues currently sit ten points away from Celtic in third place and it is unlikely that they will get their hands on the league title this season, given the dominance of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic so far.

The January transfer window looks set to be vital for Warburton and he will hope to sign a few players in order to at least bridge such a big gap between his side and their fierce city rivals.

One Rangers fan who is a regular in the Transfer Tavern has been very outspoken over the Gers in the past and he thinks Warburton needs to ensure he signs a few new players in the next window, without breaking the bank in the process.

Tavern writer Lee Clarke takes a look at three players who Warburton should look to sign, all of which are valued under £20 million.

Diego Poyet

The ex-West Ham United central midfielder would be a shrewd signing for Rangers, quite simply because he wouldn’t command a transfer fee having been released by the Hammers at the end of last season.

The son of ex-Chelsea and Uruguay international Gus is seen as a star of the future and it is bizarre that a club somewhere hasn’t already taken a chance on him.

One Rangers fan is munching away at his all-day breakfast here in the Tavern and he says he would be delighted with signing of Poyet, stating that he would be a risk worth taking due to his unattached status.

Scott Hogan

The striker was signed for Brentford by Warburton back in 2014 but unfortunately suffered a serious injury after just two games for the Bees.

The Gers boss clearly rates the striker’s ability and given his form in the Championship this season, Hogan could be on the radar of Warburton, as he looks to beef up his attacking arsenal.

According to transfermarkt.co.uk, Hogan is only worth around £425,000 and although his goals this season might bump that valuation up, it is still an option worth considering for Rangers.

One chap is sat watching the latest sports stories on the big screen here in the Tavern and he concedes that he doesn’t know much about Hogan, although he is impressed with his eight Championship goals so far this season.

Henri Lansbury

Nottingham Forest are hopeful that Lansbury signs a new deal to extend his stay at the City Ground in weeks to come, although the delay in negotiations could force the midfielder to look elsewhere which could open the door for Rangers.

Lansbury is out of contract in the summer and with transfermarkt.co.uk valuing him at just £1.7 million right now, Warburton could look to make a move in January.

One Rangers fan is sat with a pint of the landlord’s best real ale and he thinks the former Arsenal man would be a quality signing for the SPL.
