Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing with the turn around in the season since the opening day defeat to Burnley.

Since Antonio Conte has taken over the reigns at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have looked a quality side, nailed home by the fact he won the Premier League in his first season.

Upon his appointment, he made the bid to bring back Brazilian centre-back David Luiz from PSG, after a two-year spell with the French giants.

A bit of a marmite player, Luiz mixes opinions within the Chelsea stands and amongst many of our Tavern regulars.

Some say he would have been a natural successor to former captain John Terry had he not moved to PSG, some say he’s lazy and sometimes a liability.

This season, the 30-year-old really is proving both.

Whatever side of the fence you stand on, our statue-like bitter drinking Landlord at the end of the bar thinks it’s time Chelsea cut their losses once and for all.

And here’s the three reasons why…

Laziness and a Liability

This season already has seen Luiz let his Chelsea teammates down twice with a red card and giving a penalty away against Atletico Madrid. His constant poor decision making and sometimes bad judgement really plays against Chelsea when they usually need him most.

These two incidents this season haven’t had any implications as of yet but at some point, they will and it will be the fans that will receive the blowback.

Erratic Performances

Sometimes labelled as ‘PlayStation Luiz’, it seems that the Brazilian would rather score goals than defend them. He can often be found out at the back and you never know what you’re going to get from one week to the next.

While that stopped a bit last year, there are some early signs of such lapses in concentration rearing their ugly heads again.

Either an outstanding performance or a crazy, all over the place game, it’s always one or the other.

Future lack of Opportunities

With Antonio Conte preferring to play a back three, the Italian likes his club captain Gary Cahill and ever-present Cesar Azpilicueta as his first choices. Obviously, that leaves one space available in the trio, not exactly giving all that many opportunities for the rest of his squad.

New signing Antonio Rudgier, you can see as the long-term future. The 24-year-old was brought in for big money this season and you can’t see how he’s going to fit both Luiz and Rudiger in. With age not on his side, it’ll only be a matter of time before the Brazilian is warming the bench.
